This is the first time in the history that the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States has named a female to be its president!

Drew Gilpin Faust, 59, a scholar of the US South, was named 28th president of the 371-year-old university, making Harvard the fourth of the nation’s eight elite Ivy League schools to name a woman leader. The other three are Amy Gutmann of the University of Pennsylvania, Shirley M. Tilghman of Princeton University, and Ruth J. Simmons of Brown University.

Phua Chu Kang is a classic comedy character in the Singapore sitcom called Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd (or PCK Pte Ltd). The drama series is very popular in South East Asian countries such as Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. The series revolves around the Phua family, the most remarkable of which is Phua Chu Kang (Gurmit Singh), a contractor in the series. He always boasts that he is “the best contractor in Singapore, JB Malaysia and Batam”. In fact he has only two lazy and inept workers working for him. His personal clothing trademarks are his yellow pair of boots, curly hair, a giant mole, and long nails on his pinky fingers.

The Road Transport Department and the Road Safety Department of Malaysia have jointly organised a competition for best picture of a traffic offender. In a bid to reduce traffic fatalities, especially during festive seasons, the public is invited to submit photographs of motorists committing traffic offences including speeding, jumping a red light, overtaking on double lines, and overloading by lorries or trucks. The daily first-prize winner will walk away with RM150, the second-prize winner RM100, and the third-prize winner RM50. These pictures will be displayed on the department’s “Hall of Shame” website (www.panducermat.org.my), and appropriate action will be taken against the errant motorists by the Road Transport Department. The competition starts on 9 Feb and ends on 25 Feb, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations where highways and federal roads will be packed with road users in a mad rush for the hometown or “balik kampong” tradition.
